On writing and not writing

I'm starting to feel weird about calling my website "Jane Seville Books" because so far there is just the one book.  Call it a nod to optimism.  One of my New Year's Resolutions was to make better use of my social networking opportunities and communicate more with my readers.  So, here's what's going on.

I have been writing, a lot, but the things I have been writing may or may not see print, and none of them have had anything to do with my previous work.  "But Jane, you promised us a sequel!" I hear you saying.  Well...promise is a strong word...

Let me say that a sequel to Zero at the Bone is still planned.  It is still very much desired by me.  In fact, one sequel was begun, and I wrote about 50 pages of it.  So what happened?

Well, it wasn't a sequel.  Or, I ought to say, it wasn't the right sequel.  I had this idea, I started in with it, it was actually going really well, until I realized that this story was not appropriate for a follow-up.  If anything, it was a third book, or more.  It was too...well, I can't say much without spoiling it (and it may eventually end up as one of a series) but it just wasn't right.  These things happen; writing is an inexact pursuit, sometimes infuriatingly so.

Which dumped me back to square one, without an idea.  I want to write more about Jack and D, about their relationship, their lives, their continuing adventures...except I didn't have a plot.  Which is kind of important.  Some authors can just start writing without a plan.  These writers are not me.  Right now what I'm doing is the author equivalent of doodling: writing random scenes and beginnings of stories and hoping one of them catches on.  I am also writing what will probably end up as another short-novella/long-short-story like "A Very D Christmas" that will be available on the website for a nominal charge ($2-$3).  I am also writing things that have nothing to do with Jack and D.

So I hope that you will be glad for another short story, and if I end up publishing something totally unrelated first, that you will forgive me and read it anyway.

  1. Don't worry. Some of us are not that into sequels. I'd be happy to read anything else too. :-)

    1. I agree with you on reading more of D & Jack. I also thought it would be great to revisit Megan, & Churchill. I think D should go out and see who is responsible for the deaths of the mother & son. OH! What a story that would make!

  3. I'm definitely interested in your other writing, not just Jack & D stories (though I love those, too)/sequels (ditto). :-)

  4. I was so excited to get an email alert from you and to have this post updating us on what you are up to - thanks so much for sharing! I am interested in any version of anything you write about Jack and D - short, novella, bits and pieces, full sequel - whatever!! I hope your writing of random scenes gets you going. And I'm also very interested in hearing more about any new story you are writing - not just Jack and D - so please do keep us updated!

Happy New Year and thanks for the update - it all sounds like good news to me!

  5. I love Jack and D and I totally understand if you feel the story does not quite 'fit' as a sequel. I'll be only too happy to read any new short stories about Jack and D, plot or no plot!

  6. I wouldn't say no to a story with new characters in "Jack and D's verse". I'm such a big fan of the way you make heroes of your stories believable and alive that it'd be enough for me to just read about our fav guys from perspective of the new characters.

  8. While a sequel would be nice (at some point ;-)), I'd be happy enough reading anything, be it short stories, novellas or new novels, in or out of the Jack and D 'verse :-) Happy writing!

  9. Good stories no matter the plot are in short order in this fandom so more stories by good authors are always welcomed no matter if those stories are linked to previous works.

  10. I'm itching for another Jack and D book, but the most important thing is that it's a book you feel good about. I've read books that authors forced out and it's never as good as books they were truly inspired for. So as much as I want a sequel, what I want more is a really good book about one of my favorite couples in the gay romance genre, even if that means we have to wait longer. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to whatever your muse inspires you to write. :)

  13. I just finished Zero At the Bone and absolutely loved it! I agree with most of the other comments here: I'd love to read more about Jack and D, but if you have other characters in your head begging to be brought to life, by all means let them out. I look forward to reading anything you put out in the future.

  16. I want more of your writing, Jane,
I'd take anything because I love the way you tell your stories. I love Jack and D and I would be happy with a sequel, a short story or another story altogether.

But please, give us some more, will you?

  19. I've been waiting for a sequel on the adventures of Jack & D bringing along Megan and more on Frank. I'm seeing these two as a possible couple. It can't be easy to follow through with another smash hit as Zero at the Bone was, but fans can only hope Ms. Seville finds the story in her head and puts it on paper for everyone to enjoy. Good luck Jane.

    1. Yeah it would be wonderful to have Frank in the sequel.of D & Jack. Hey maybe Megan could return and she & Frank could get together. Oh, what the heck all i want is to have a sequel to ZERO at the BONE. Best book i have ever read.

  20. When i watch a movie with Jason Statham i think to myself, that is how i think of D while i'm reading Zero To The Bone. Can't get any better than that.

    1. Still think of D's being a close second to Jason Statham. Now for more on D & Jack. Since Jack became pretty darn good at using a gun he could help in finding out who was the one responsible for mother & son's deaths. Just thinking.

  22. Dear Ms. Seville,
    Happy New Year!!
Are you having a severe case of writer's block?? I have been chomping at the bit for the continuing story of Jack and D. It's been 5 years since Zero at the Bone and will 2015 be the year for your most highly anticipated sequel release??? Do tell!!

  23. Dear Ms. Seville,
I just want to thank you for all that you have done. Your writing is fantastic and it has me begging for more. I know it's been a long time since you've written Zero at the Bone. I'm eagerly waiting for the sequel, although I can't imagine what it must be like for the people who have waited longer.
Is there perhaps something that we readers of this book could help? It would be such an honor to help you with something or anything. I'm not even sure if you are still using this blog. I hope so truly. I love this story so much, it was the perfect introduction into this scary (to me) section of the library and I would love to see more D and Jack's story! This has certainly open my eyes and encouraged me not to give up on my own writing. Being gay myself, most of the novels that I have feature the main romance being two men, and seeing this story has really made me feel that there is more out there. I'm going to stop now, I've already written so much. Thank you so much to your contribution.
    Sincerely,
    Christian

    1. Totally agree Christian. If Ms. Seville needs any suggestions on where to go with more on D & Jack I am sure most of her readers would love to help out. If it meant we are able to read more on our favorite couple we would do so in a heartbeat.

  25. Whenever I'm in a bad mood or going through something upsetting I'll play your book from wherever I last left off and it does such an amazing job of lifting my spirits when I need it most. It made me smile through some dark moments when my dad passed away in September and it's certainly helping now as I'm working during the coronavirus. I truly enjoy and appreciate what you've done and I'm sure I'll still be giving it plenty of listens for years to come (the audibles narration was just too freaking good). I hope you're doing well and thank you :)

  26. Zero to the Bone was SO INCREDIBLY well written. The characters were beautifully well developed, with marvelous psychological insights, their communication just spot on for who they were, the humor intelligent and the angst so well articulated. I loved this book and have read it twice. I would love to read anything else by Jane Seville. I almost prefer it not to be a sequel because I want Jack and D to have their peaceful life they earned. I hope you will be inspired to write again, to introduce other intelligent characters to your fans, to allow us to follow their lives and to do so within your excellent writing style! Thank you again for this great book.
